The Experience
Banbury Helicopter Flights
It starts at Turweston Aerodrome, where the thump of the rotors builds in your chest before you even leave the ground. The lift is smooth, but you still can’t escape that little lurch of excitement as the fields below shrink and tilt away. Green, gold, and hedgerow lines slide past, and in the distance Banbury begins to show itself.
Should your flight head West towards the town itself, the market square is easy to pick out, with the streets branching away in every direction. Banbury Cross catches the sun, and the River Cherwell winds lazily through the middle, light flickering on its surface. You can trace the towpaths, spot narrowboats moored along the banks, and see the patchwork of gardens and canals like a picture someone’s drawn by hand. If it doesn’t then a whole different adventure awaits: one of regional beauty and intriguing sights.
A short flight keeps you close — a sweep over the town and then out into countryside where hills and fields roll on for miles. Go for longer and you’ll spot Silverstone Circuit, neat as a toy model, then the symmetry of Stowe House, with its gorgeous parkland and striking architecture, and finally back over Towcester Racecourse, its oval sitting proud against the green.
And through it all, the real pleasure is in the in-between — the soft bank into a turn, the hum in your headset, and that odd, almost secret feeling of having the whole place laid out at your feet. It’s enough to make you want to go again, the moment you’ve landed!
