The Flight
Lift off near Honiton and East Devon starts to open out beneath you.
A helicopter ride does not need to be long to feel like something special. Even the shorter flights give you that first proper rush as the rotors gather pace, the cabin settles into its hum, and the ground begins to fall away beneath you.
For first-time flyers, Honiton is a lovely place to get airborne. The town sits close to open Devon countryside, wooded hills, patchwork fields and the wider East Devon landscape, so the view begins to earn its keep almost straight away.
A longer route gives you more time to look around, but the shorter rides still deliver the lift, the bank, the view and that odd little grin when familiar roads and fields suddenly stop behaving like familiar roads and fields.

Honiton Helicopter Tours
Honiton is a good place for a helicopter ride because the scenery does not have to work too hard. The town sits in that lovely East Devon position where countryside, hills, villages and coast all feel within reach, even if the exact view depends very much on the route. From the ground, it is easy to think of them as separate places. From the air, they start to belong together.
The lift-off is the moment the day changes gear. One second you are sitting there, hearing the blades gather pace and wondering whether you are going to feel nervous. The next, the helicopter rises cleanly away and Honiton begins to shrink into rooftops, lanes and green edges. Roads become thin lines. Fields turn into blocks of colour. The whole place suddenly looks more delicate than it does from a car window.
Depending on the route, you may get views across the surrounding East Devon countryside, with wooded valleys, farmland and small settlements sitting between the hills. The nearby Blackdown Hills National Landscape gives this part of Devon some proper shape, although exact sights will always depend on the flight chosen, visibility, weather and air traffic on the day.
On longer tours, there may be more time for the view to stretch towards wider East Devon, and possibly towards the coast if the route and conditions allow. The East Devon National Landscape is one of the reasons this area works so well from above, with its mix of hills, valleys, farmland and coastal edges. It is not a flight to over-script. Part of the pleasure is watching the landscape reveal itself as you go.

They are quick, bright and full of movement, with enough time to feel the helicopter climb, watch the horizon shift, and see Honiton from a height most people never will.
