Camberley is one of those places that makes more sense from above than it sometimes does at street level. On the ground, it is roads, roundabouts, town edges, army history, golf courses, trees and bits of Surrey, Berkshire and Hampshire all rubbing shoulders. From a helicopter, the whole thing starts to organise itself.

The lift-off is the bit that catches most people out. One moment you are sitting there trying to look calm. The next, the ground has slipped away and the helicopter is easing upwards with that low, purposeful thrum running through the cabin. Camberley becomes smaller very quickly. Rooflines flatten. The roads begin to look like fine grey threads. Even a short flight gives you that lovely little jolt where familiar places stop looking familiar.

Depending on the route, you may get views across Surrey Heath, the Blackwater Valley, Crowthorne, Frimley and the wider green belt that sits around this part of the county. The area around Royal Military Academy Sandhurst is one of the more distinctive local reference points, although exact routing will always depend on air traffic, weather and the flight chosen.

On longer tours, there is simply more time for the landscape to open up. You might find yourself looking out towards the wooded edges around Bracknell and Crowthorne, with places such as The Look Out Discovery Centre and the surrounding forest sitting among the trees, if the route and visibility allow. The pilot will point out what can be seen, but part of the pleasure is just letting the view come to you rather than trying to tick off a list.

Shorter flights still have plenty going for them. They are sharp, exciting and over just quickly enough to leave you wanting another lap. Longer rides give the experience room to breathe, especially when the helicopter banks and the horizon shifts sideways for a moment. Either way, this is Camberley from a height most people never see it from, and that alone gives the ride its buzz.
